Estate Supports Library Improvements

Books-in-Leadhills-LibraryLeadhills Miner’s Library is the oldest subscription library in the British Isles and the Estate is proud to be supporting the current improvements being made to this historic building, which is an extremely important part of the Leadhills community and its past.

John Crawford, Leadhills Heritage Trust Chairman, said “Leadhills Library is Britain’s oldest subscription library and the world’s first library for working people. It contains books dating back to the 17thcentury and represents a mini history of reading in Scotland over three centuries . The building, housing the library,  is currently undergoing refurbishment and we need a burglar alarm to make the building more secure for the future. The trustees of the library are delighted that the Leadhills Estate is footing the bill for this which is part of a programme of improvements which we are currently putting in place to make the library a more attractive tourist destination.”
