Glen Franka update: Monitoring water levels and unexpected discoveries  

Since our last update in May, we have continued to monitor the water level at Glen Franka reservoir. In line with the Measures in the Interest of Safety (MIOS) under the Reservoir (Scotland Act), we are aiming to keep it at approximately 1.5–2 metres below the Top Water Level (TWL).

Despite the particularly dry spell we have experienced, maintaining this reduced level has proved challenging. When rainfall does occur, the reservoir level rises rapidly. And, even with the outlet valve fully open, we have been unable to consistently maintain our target water level.

These observations have prompted us to investigate whether the valve inlet may be partially obstructed by weed, sediment, or mineral deposits. To better understand the situation, we have commissioned a specialist diving company to inspect the valve inlet. The inspection will take place in August and will check for any blockages, damage, or the presence of crust or scale that could be affecting the valve’s performance.

Alongside this, we have installed a new depth gauge marker board, allowing us to safely and accurately monitor changes in the water level. We have also erected additional warning signs to alert visitors to areas of soft, silty ground around the exposed reservoir margins.

One of the more striking changes has been the rapid spread of grass across the newly exposed banksides. The dry conditions have allowed vegetation to take hold quickly, transforming areas that were previously underwater.

Perhaps the most unexpected discovery, however, has been the appearance of a long-hidden wreck, revealed as the water level has fallen. It is a fascinating reminder of Glen Franka’s history and one of the more intriguing outcomes of the recent drawdown.

We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will provide a further update once the inspection has been completed and its findings are available.
